O pontapé de saída para as diversas premiações que homenageiam o que melhor se fez no último ano foi dado pelos Gotham Independent Film Awards, distinção entregue por críticos de cinema, jornalistas, programadores de festivais e curadores de filmes.
The Rider foi o escolhido como melhor filme, sucedendo assim a Call Me By Your Name (Chama-me pelo teu nome) e Moonlight. First Reformed (No Coração da Escuridão) e The Favorite eram os filmes mais nomeados, tendo o primeiro arrecadado distinções pelo argumento (Paul Schrader) e ator (Ethan Hawke), e o segundo levar para casa a única estatueta que já estava garantida: a de melhor elenco.
Destaque ainda para o triunfo de Toni Collette como melhor atriz por Hereditary (Heriditário), e os dois prémios arrecadados por Eight Grade: Melhor Realizador em Estreia (Bo Burnham) e Melhor Revelação (Elsie Fisher).
