Na noite em que Mad Max: Estrada da Fúria conquistou seis Óscares nas chamadas categorias técnicas, O Caso Spotlight foi considerado o melhor filme do ano na 88ª cerimónia de entrega dos prémios anuais da Academia das Artes e Ciências Cinematográficas.
O filme de Tom McCarthy levou assim a melhor sobre The Revenant- O Renascido, o qual contava com doze nomeações e que ainda assim viu Alejandro G. Iñárritu e Leonardo DiCaprio serem premiados como melhor realizador e melhor ator.
Quanto a surpresas, não as houve verdadeiramente, sendo talvez a conquista dos prémios de interpretação secundária por Mark Rylance (A Ponte dos Espiões) e Alicia Vikander (A Rapariga Dinamarquesa) as únicas exceções.
